From your first appointment through delivery and postpartum care, Woodlands Women’s Care is there each step of the way.  With extensive training and experience, our physicians specialize in prenatal and obstetric care for normal and high-risk pregnancies.  Understanding the importance of this time in your life, the doctors at Woodlands Women’s Care are there to answer your questions and provide you with the resources you will need to keep you and your baby healthy throughout your pregnancy.  Our doctors usually see OB patients for the first prenatal visit in the 7th or 8th week of pregnancy.

Over The Counter Medications and Home Remedies Used In Pregnancy

 

Nausea & Vomiting (Morning Sickness)

  • Try Unisom 25mg daily at bedtime daily and
    Vitamin B6 25mg 3 times a day daily
  • Ginger root 1g daily, ginger tea
  • Crystallized ginger
  • Dramamine
  • Peppermint Candy
  • Emetrol
  • Preggie Pops
  • Sea sickness bracelet
  • Try eating small meals (crackers, sprite, and hot tea)
Heartburn (Reflux)
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals
  • Tums or mylanta
  • Pepcid AC (famotadine)

Gas & Indigestion

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals
  • Stay upright for 30 minutes after each meal
  • Take Maalox for indigestion
  • Take Mylicon, Gaviscon, Gas X for gas

Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer

  • Tylenol (acetaminophen)
  • *Absolutely NO aspirin or ibuprofen products, unless specifically recommended by your physician.*

Cold, Flu, Sinusitis & Allergies

  • Saline (salt water) lavage such as neti pot
  • Steam
  • Increase fluids and rest
  • Sudafed, Actifed
  • Ocean nasal spray
  • Robitussin DM syrup or mucinex tablets
  • Benadryl or Claritin (loratadine)
  • Tylenol cold and sinus

Sore Throat

  • Sucrets, Halls or Chloraseptic lozenges
  • Cepacol throat spray

Diarrhea

  • Kaopectate
  • Imodium AD
  • Gatorade and Water
  • Limit dairy products
  • BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast)
  • Avoid pepto-bismol

Constipation

  • Increase water and high fiber foods
  • Drink grape or apple juice
  • Take Fibercon, Colace, Citrucel or Benefiber
  • Miralax if needed

Hemorrhoids

  • Prevent constipation
  • Use tucks pads, Preparation H, Proctogel, Anusol, Nupercainal cream
Insomnia
  • Warm bath before bed
  • Tylenol pm, benadryl
Back pain
  • Heat – warm bath, heating pad
  • May use Icy Hot, Thera-gesic, Biofreeze
  • Massage
  • Stretch
Cold sores
  • Abreva
Yeast Infections
  • Monistat 7 Day Treatment

Nutrition For You And Your Baby

Recommended weight gain 25lbs to 35lbs (add 10 extra lbs for twin pregnancy).

During pregnancy, liquids must be a minimum of 8 glasses daily; water and pasteurized juices.

Soft cheese and milk must be pasteurized due to Listeria Bacterium, which can be present in these products.

Limit fats and sugars because these are empty calories.

Fruits: 2 to 4 servings daily.

Vegetables: 3 to 5 servings daily (1 half cup equals 1 serving).

Meats and Proteins: 3 to 5 servings (equals 2 1/2 oz per serving).

Grains: 6 to 11 servings daily (includes pasta, 1 slice of bread is considered one serving).

Dairy Products: 4 servings daily (pasteurized products, chief source of calcium).

Seafood: – Up to 12 ounces a week of low mercury fish (Canned Light Tuna, Red Snapper, Catfish, Tilapia, Pollock) & Shellfish (Crawfish, Shrimp, Oysters, Crab)

Up to 6 ounces a week of white tuna

**DO NOT EAT Shark, King Mackerel, Swordfish, Tilefish due to high levels of mercury**

For your convenience you can now pre-register for delivery online at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital.  Please begin to do this prior to the 28th week of your pregnancy.
